FANES

ABOUT

Some 20-kilometres south west of Rhodes Town, away from the busy resort areas, is the pretty coastal village of Fanes. Sun worn houses of white and yellow line the little streets of this sleepy village, where you can enjoy the sea without the crowds, getting a real taste of Rhodes life. The beach here is long, flat, and wonderfully unspoilt. Its exposed situation means it gets fantastic surf and wind that are perfect for kitesurfing in particular, but also many water sports. If you want a beach that offers plenty of privacy and quiet, you will find this suitable.

There are only a few small hotels and holiday rentals in the area, so you can be sure that the village never gets overwhelmed with tourists. However, don’t expect much else. There are few shops. The main attraction of Fanes is for those in search of connecting with nature, outdoor activities, and a place to forget about their everyday lives for a while. Within the town, you’ll find several good quality tavernas and a picturesque fishing port. The liveliest time of year in Fanes comes in August every 5th when the four-day Sotiros festival takes place with traditional dancing and music, and a market.
