ARCHANGELOS
ABOUT
With a population of 6,000 Archangelos is one of the biggest villages in Rhodes. What makes it so special isn’t particularly beautiful architecture; the village looks like many Greek villages. What makes it stand out is the dedication to local traditions that have been passed down from father to son, from mother to daughter, for generations. As you meander through the narrow streets, lined with old houses and the occasional splash of colour, you notice that the old ways are still alive and well here. Local women, dressed in traditional clothes still bake bread in outdoor wood fired ovens and warmly greet visitors.

Local crafts are practiced in the same ways they have been for hundreds of years. Archangelos is particularly known for its carpet weaving and goat skin boots. These boots haven’t changed in centuries and are worn by women working in the fields as protection from snakes. The boots are designed so that they can be worn on either foots comfortably.

The village has two fine churches the Church of Saint John and its beautiful 14th century frescos and the main village Church of the Archangel Michael. Just a short 10-minute walk from the village is the castle of Saint John. Also, just outside the village, you can find a small herd of the region’s black wild horses on Mt. Strongylos. Travel a few kilometres to the local Stegna beach, a place that is still unspoilt by tourism and where you’ll find the amazing stalactites of Koumellos cave.
