In the south east of Rhodes is the lively village of Asklipio. This mountainous terrain is home to some of the finest historic sites on the island. The Byzantine church, built in 1060, is particularly beautiful and has recently been restored to its original glory. Its paintings are stunning and well worth taking the time to see. Next to the church is a folklore museum, situated in what was once the church’s olive press. The olive press still retains its original stones and equipment.

 

Also not to be missed here is the village’s Medieval Castle. It was built at the top of the village in the 13th century by the knights of St. John. Spend the evening hours at the castle ruins, it is the perfect place to watch the sunset. The rural landscapes around the village are filled with olive and pine trees. The village square has a number of tavernas serving dishes made from local produce and are always high quality. Traditional practices, such as bread baking in outdoor wood ovens are alive and well in Asklipio. This is one of the best places to escape the throngs of tourists at the beaches and get a taste for authentic Greek life.
