LACHANIA

ABOUT

Lachania village is found in the sparsely populated southern region of Rhodes. Unspoilt by tourism development this is a place to come for those who want to escape overcrowded beaches and experience traditional Rhodes charm. The population of just over 300 take great pride in their little village, continually ensuring its beauty and looking after its structures.

The surrounding countryside is lush and hilly. Lachania sits atop a hill overlooking the sea and mountains. Just 2km from the village is a beautiful, sandy beach where you can be certain of having plenty of space to soak up the sun.

The main profession of the local people is farming and a wonderful old windmill greats visitors at the entrance of the village. You won’t find much trace of anything tourist centred here. Instead, the village square, lined with shade giving trees has some small tavernas offering tasty local dishes and a basic grocery store. Nearby, you will also find the lovingly restored old olive press – Magana.

Lachania has a few interesting historic attractions that are worth visiting. Zoodochos Pighi is particularly interesting with its medieval monastery, Corinthian columns from the 16th century, and Roman ruins. St. George church, built in the 19th century is also worth checking out. Walk around Lachania’s narrow streets to see the traditional houses with their brightly painted doors. Spend some time getting to know the locals who are a wealth of information about hidden scenic beauty spots that you won’t find in any guidebook.
