MESANAGROS

ABOUT

In the sparsely populated far south of Rhodes, 83 km from Rhodes Town is the ancient village of Mesanagros with its population of just 100. The village is found deep in the mountains far from its neighbours, of which the closest is 18km away, and contains excellent examples of housing styles found in the countryside. Besides the charming architecture Mesanagros has a number of interesting monasteries.

One of the most interesting historic sites is the church of the Assumption. This church dates back to the 13th century, but sits on the site where a magnificent Christian basilica stood that was built in the 6th century. The basilica was large, especially for the time, and contained three naves. If you travel a few kilometres, you can visit the monastery of the Virgin Mary which has Byzantine origins and is said to perform miracles. The views from here are breathtaking.

Other historic sites include the Skala of St. Thomas from the 14th century, the 18th century Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, and the ruins of paleochristian temples uncovered in archaeological digs. Nature lovers will find endless places to explore with forests, birds, and waterfalls to go in search of.
