SALAKOS

ABOUT

A place to combine the mountain with the sea, Salakos village lies at the foot of Profitis Ilias on the North-western coast of the island of Rhodes, about 38 km from its amazing capital, the city of Rhodos. Salakos is renowned for its fine walnuts. At the heart of the village lies its stone-paved and shady square, with running water and fig trees. The 600 inhabitants stay in the village all year round, and although they are getting used to tourism still keep up their old traditions. You still see grandmothers in headscarves grinding wheat and spreading the pligouri to dry in the sunshine or baking «lamprokouloura» in the wood-fired ovens. In his traditional workshop near the square Mr Andreas still makes by hand the carved wooden chairs for which the village was once famous.
