Paradise Island of Rhodes, through the eyes of Kevin and his family!

Lindos, Rhodes, Greece
St. Paul's Bay, Lindos - Rhodes, Greece

You will experience a joyous slice of paradise as you sit on the idyllic Lindos beach and watch the sun creep behind the ancient hills that have played host to this magnificent spectacle since time began.

With the divine sandy beach laid out in front of you and sea water that barely moves in a bay blessed with as much natural beauty as any in a European holiday resort, this experience on the sun-kissed island of Rhodes leaves a lasting impression for all who enjoy it in the company of an ice cold beer.

Legend has it that Rhodes was blessed by the sun god Helios and the locals believe that explains why it enjoys 300 days of glorious sunshine every year and if you are looking for the star of its show, Lindos is the runaway winner as it is fortunate to have been bestowed a charm that money could never create.

Its historic acropolis overlooks distinctive white holiday homes in an eye-catching outpost that has no space for hotels, with the luxury we have become used to on holiday replaced by more traditional beauty here.

A bustling village square is the first sight that greets you when you arrive in Lindos, with the cobbled streets providing a glimpse of a biblical setting that has barely changed in a century and more.

All three beaches in Lindos boast beautiful golden sand, the character-filled tavern eateries are buzzing with chatter every night and everyone who is present appreciates that you are privileged to be spending time visiting this corner of Greek history.

Lindos looks much the same as it did when I first set foot on this hallowed ground as a four-year-old child back in 1979 and this is how it will look forever more, with a charm oozing from every viewing point that never loses its appeal.

That first visit almost 40 years ago provided something of a culture shock to the locals, with our 25-strong party that included a host of Irish musicians arriving with their bagpipes, fiddles and guitars and staging impromptu traditional music sessions in bars that had never seen the like of it.

You can imagine the scene, with the local police struggling to know whether to toast the uninvited house band or arrest the perpetration for noise pollution, but thankfully a middle ground was found and my Dad just about avoided being carted off to a Greek prison for interrogation!

Back then, Lindos was only just beginning to embrace the tourist culture and in the years since, it has become the star destination of the sunshine island that is Rhodes.

The historic old town of Rhodes has monuments and buildings that will appeal to the culturally curious, while the strip of bars and the ‘Happy Hour’ cocktails in Faliraki will provide a very different kind of adventure that may not appeal to anyone under the age of 25.

Meanwhile, families can lap up the Rhodes sunshine in a tourism industry that has exploded on the outskirts of the traditional tourist resorts, with the Princess Andriana Resort & Spa hotel offering us a luxury base just 15 minutes down the road from Lindos.

Five-star all-inclusive resorts have a habit of coming up short of expectations in some destinations, yet this hotel based in Kiotari lives up to its billing with magnificent high class rooms and stunning food in its three main restaurants.

With an on-site beach that has its own all-inclusive bar, a top quality spa that offers a mix of massages and manicures and a wide selection of bars serving a fine array of drinks to suit all pallets, this hotel ticks every box.

Princess Andriana Resort & Spa boasts five restaurants on-site including à la carte rooftop eatery and a superb barbecue on the beach, an all-day snack bar and a superb buffet restaurant that carters for every taste, this is an oasis of luxury that is a short boat, bus or taxi ride away from the hustle and bustle of Lindos.

If you are travelling with children, get the deluxe family rooms that come with a vast shared pool, ensuring your entertainment for the day just a few steps away from your bed and the race to secure a lounger around the main pool is no longer an issue.

There is also an energetic mini disco for the little ones every night that puts a smile on all young faces, with the spectacular water fountain display every evening adding to the classy feel at Princess Andriana Resort & Spa.

Those looking for a more relaxed adults only hotel should check out the recently opened Mayia Exclusive Resort & Spa, which offers luxury accommodation at an impressively affordable price.

Greece may not be the first choice location on a list of possible destinations for Irish tourists due to the lack of package holidays, but maybe it should be with the guarantee of all-year round sunshine than is far more reliable than Spain and Portugal in the early summer months.

Rhodes may just be the most glittering of the Greek islands as this is the holiday hideaway with something for everyone.
